Mikel Marton, a Montreal based artist, creates highly stylized photographs and performances for which he designs the sets and does the styling.
As part of a new generation of young photographers, whose body of work consists of glamorous photographs that flirt with camp and homo eroticism, Marton stands out through his frank and simultaneous sugary bluntness.
Aside from the occasional dose of make-up and flattering light, the subjects as well as the photographs, remain largely unmanipulated. Marton elevates the male form beyond both the traditional nude and pornography, while images of female urban guerrilla fighters are fashionized. Continue reading…
He likes to amplify the spirit with skin, avatars of spirit are shaped into naked, gloriously beautiful beings that represent aspects of heaven and earth alike. Fascinated by the idea that sexuality and spirituality might be the same, he creates his own gods, his own mythology and makes up fantasies that produce a consistently sensuous body of work.
While overt sentimentality and heavy gay sexual overtones deflect from serious critical assessment, an unabashed mix of commercial and high art, mythic imagery, glamour and poetry puts the artist in an interesting twilight zone that traverses high art and low culture.
